Ingrida Barker is in her 10th year as an educator, six of which were dedicated to teaching at the middle school level and three spent as a high school administrator in charge of curriculum and instruction. As teacher, Ms. Barker taught English Language Arts, facilitated Spanish I through WV Virtual School, and led a Globaloria pilot at Sandy River Middle School. She also worked as a supervisor of curriculum and instruction at River View High School, a comprehensive high school with both academic and vocational programs. As a principal, Ms. Barker focused her work on leading collaborative teams, sustaining and supporting the counseling program, providing professional development to teachers, and engaging all stakeholders in continuous data analysis as a part of the school improvement cycle.Currently, Ms. Barker works as an assistant superintendent of secondary education of McDowell County Schools.
Ms. Barker earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Daugavpils University in Latvia in English and French, and completed a Master of Arts degree from West Virginia University in Secondary Education. She also obtained an Educational Leadership certification from Concord University and is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in Leadership Studies at Marshall University. Ms. Barker served on the state-level stakeholder team aligning the WV CSOs to the Common Core Standards and has presented sessions on ELA Next Generation Standards to various groups of teachers at the county and school level. Ms. Barker has also published an article in Learning Principal on teacher leader voice and capacity building leading to student growth. Previously, Ms. Barker was named 2009 McDowell County Teacher of the Year, 2009 WV Tech Steps Teacher, and a PLA Distinguished Scholar in 2011.
